PRODUCTION

Elephant Gin’s products are crafted one hour east of Hamburg, Germany, using resolute artisan production methods.

All ingredients are carefully selected and balanced. All bottles are custom-made, adorned with hand-written labels, embossed with a crest and sealed with natural cork. Each batch of Elephant Gin is also named after past great tuskers or elephants that Elephant Gin’s partners currently help to protect.

The production of all products follow the traditional method of copper still distillation, in a still designed and built by Arnold Holstein. Refined in small batches of 600 – 700 bottles, the gin is regularly tasted to ensure that any impurities in the heads and tails are removed. The whole process gives the gin its purity, complexity and smoothness.

How to make Gin

ELEPHANT LONDON DRY GIN

Botanicals

Elephant Gin’s select African botanicals introduce flavour profiles that are unique to this product. Examples are the citrusy flavours of the so-called “superfruit” Baobab, the extraordinary Buchu plant with a flavour similar to blackcurrant, and the African Wormwood with its sharp floral note. Locally sourced spring water, fresh apples and other select ingredients enhance the purity and smoothness of the gin’s finish.

Distillation

Once all ingredients are carefully checked for any impurities they are left to macerate in natural grain spirit for more than a day, guaranteeing the optimal level of flavour is extracted.
Elephant Gin stays true to the definition of a London Dry Gin as it abandons any additional artificial flavouring and only uses locally sourced spring water to result in an alcohol volume of 45%.

Taste and Aromas

The gin’s distinct nose first yields a subtle juniper aroma, with an undertone of mountain pine and other herbaceous notes. The taste is complex but strikingly smooth, encompassing floral, fruity and spicy flavours, which can be enjoyed both straight and in a cocktail.

ELEPHANT SLOE GIN

Botanicals

Elephant Sloe Gin combines the taste of the premium London Dry Gin with the classic flavour of fresh sloe berries. Elephant Gin exclusively uses fresh wild sloes to produce the liquer. The fruit is harvested by hand and carefully selected – keeping only the best berries for the sloe gin production.
Production
The skin of the fruits is then cut before the berries are left to macerate in Elephant London Dry Gin for several months. In order to retain the highest amount of aromatic flavour components, Elephant Sloe Gin remains unfiltered and can be identified by a natural cloudiness. The result is a red-tinted spirit that unfolds a complex bouquet bursting with flavours. Compared to other sloe gins, Elephant Sloe Gin has a relatively low sugar content paired with a higher alcohol volume of 35 percent. This makes it ideally suited to mixing in cocktails as well as enjoying it neat.
Taste and Aromas
Elephant Sloe Gin has a richly rounded, lightly sweet and exquisitely fruity bouquet as well as a typical warm red colour to the spirit. The deliberately discreet addition of sugar triggers a perfect balance between tart and sweet notes – without the need for additional artificial flavours.

DESIGN FEATURES

50% of our Elephant Sloe Gin comes with a set of colourful beads tied around the neck of the bottles. They are handcrafted especially for Elephant Gin by the Maasai in Kenya. Use them as a bracelet or necklace – whatever your preference!

The Elephant Sloe Gin labels feature the year of production or vintage – handwritten by our calligrapher of course.

ELEPHANT STRENGTH GIN

Botanicals

Elephant Strength Gin (57%) is a variation on the award-winning Elephant London Dry Gin, which is stronger and mightier than the original. The botanicals include the same 14 botanicals as the Elephant London Dry Gin – but much more of them and in different quantities. For example, the Elephant Strength Gin highlights the aromas of the extraordinary African Buchu with a flavour similar to blackcurrant, sweet orange peel and herbaceous Mountain pine.

Production

Made in small batches, Elephant Gin is produced using the traditional method of copper still distillation in an Arnold Holstein still.
Taste and Aromas

To taste, the gin is powerful (think elephant-powerful), intense and full-bodied, with a fresh aroma and a higher viscosity than the original; superb in cocktails, it’s equally perfect for recreating the African bush Sundowner experience and for bold adventures across urban plains.

DESIGN FEATURES

The Elephant Strength bottle takes inspiration from the gin’s naval origins, with navy blue accents and an inviting map of the ocean, conjuring far-flung exploration and the spirit of adventure at the heart of the brand. Instead of the hemp string that ties around the London Dry bottles, the Strength Gin features a rope-like string with a charming miniature anchor hanging from it.

The Elephant Strength labels carry the names of the so-called Magnificent Seven: the strongest and most impressive elephants known to Kruger National Park, South Africa, these precious bull elephants all bear tusks weighing more than 50kg each.
